Searching for your next apartment could be both exciting and exhausting especially in a busy place like New York City. You need to consider a lot of things and make sure that you won’t regret the decision you’ve made once you moved in to your new apartment. To help you ease up in remembering those things, I came up with these 11 F’s you need to do in finding your dream NYC apartment:
Form a checklist
This is the first thing you need to prepare: a checklist. Create a list of what you are looking for — the size, location, and other important things you might be needing. Prepare the list of appliances and other stuff you need to bring, make a list of their sizes as well to make sure they will fit in your new apartment.
Focus on your preference
Set your standards to ensure you’ll be getting the best place to stay in the next 5, 10 years or the longest time possible. Do you want a townhouse, a condo unit, a shared or a solo apartment?
Finalize the ideal layout
Decide the floor layout you desire. Do you need a two-storey or bungalow-type apartment, maybe an additional floor, an attic, or probably a basement too? Do you just need a studio-type apartment or need additional rooms, extra bathrooms? Can you still climb up the stairs at ease or not?
Fix your budget
As the saying goes, live within your means. Look only for the apartment that will suit your budget so you won’t stress yourself working too much and can’t enjoy your stay there anymore.
Find a tool
As I’ve mentioned earlier, finding your dream apartment can either be exciting or stressful. Thanks to the technology today, we can avoid that stress at some point.
I found a great apartment hunting tool you can use to help you out in searching for the best apartment in New York City. It’s called Zumper.
Zumper is an online apartment hunting platform used by millions of renters to find houses, rooms, condos, or apartments for rent. Processing is digital so you may submit your rental applications and credit reports with Zumper screening service which is powered by TransUnion™.
With Zumper, you’ll only get quality listings with their updated inventories. You don’t just browse for the apartment listings but you can set a real-time alert based on the filters you set: by location, price range, bedroom count, pet-friendly, or amenity and even set an alert to get notifications when a new listing has been posted.
Figure out
Once you’ve found a prospective apartment, do not forget to evaluate the property. Look not only for the nice things you can see but also for the flaws; remember to do a rigid property inspection. Is there any leak on the ceiling, faucets? Are the light fuses properly working? Is the water supply sufficient? Use the list you’ve prepared to make sure you won’t miss on anything important and figure out everything that you need to check.
Familiarize
Another important thing is to do your homework. Check the amenities within the village or vicinity: look for the nearest grocery stores or food shops and restaurants, church, banks, gym. Observe the community as well, and check if the neigborhood is safe for you.
Fantasize
Use your imagination and create your vision of what it looks like when you move there. Where will you place your stuff, your home decors, your coffee table, and so on.
Fit the bill
Is the place humid or cold? Do you need to open more lights than the usual? Make sure you can foot the bill once you moved in.
Filter and act fast
Always get ready with your cash for the down payment so that once you’ve filtered all your choices and found the best one, you can grab it immediately. Don’t procrastinate or else you might lose it.
Fine print review
Be careful with what you will be getting into. Remember to read the lease agreement thoroughly before signing anything. Mark red flags if there are any and discuss it with your broker.
Don’t make your apartment search a nightmare, plan it well and make sure you’ll move only to the apartment you’ve all been dreaming to stay.
