With the recent announcement of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte during his live press conference, a cash assistance will be released to Filipinos. The cash assistance of 5,000 Pesos to 8,000 Pesos will be released via DSWD under the Social Amelioration Program (SAP) to assist the Filipino citizens during this CoVID crisis.
But as per the announcement, the middle-income class will not be included. With this, a lot of people are asking who are considered to be in that class category in our country?
Below is an infographic I created based on the 2015 and 2017 PSA survey:
From the 2015 PSA survey, the population distribution by income classes were as follows:
High-Income Class 1.4%
Middle-Income Class 40.2%
Low-Income Class 58.4%
This means that two(2) out of five(5) Filipinos and HALF of households were MIDDLE INCOME
In 2017, a family consisting of five(5) members can be considered in the middle income if it has a monthly income between P20,000-P115,000.

It’s interesting to see it all broken down and to see what other countries are doing to help during this stressful time. Is there other assistance for the middle class being offered?

That’s so sad that such a huge chunk of the population will not receive the help they need. I’ve always wondered what these decisions were based on myself.

Wow… I’ve been avoiding the news recently because it’s just so devastating. But this is extremely disappointing on so many levels that I don’t really have words for it. I’m so sorry that this is happening right now.

I think it’s not easy when you live in the middle class no? You’re the one who is paying taxes but not included in the cash assistance

Sad how hard people work and can’t seem to get ahead. Not really understanding as 20k-115k is a big range.

This was really informative. Glad I read it!

That’s not how things should work… people should be given money based on their income and expenses, not their social class.

I hate that political power is all about money. It’s so gross. I guess in the US my husband and I would be considered lower middle class but we still struggle a lot and have debt. It’s hard.

We had assistance here in the US and it was given to everyone. I think it’s amazing that they did, but I wonder how they can afford to do that when they are already in huge debt. But right now it’s important to keep the economies going. Sorry to hear that it is not even distributed in your country. That’s crazy and a shame.

I live in Poland and I guess I belong to the middle class. However, as someone had commented here before, it’s easier to live as a lower class in terms of the perks. I’m not a mother and don’t have a family, so for the time being I pay more to cover for this kind of expenses. 🙂

It is sad that political powers do so much maneuvering to not help those in need. I wish they would just be willing to help.

A very informative post… interesting to me that in the US everyone received some assistance and in your country it’s not the same.

oh!!! I had no idea that is how people are grouped together, this is really awful.

This is very informative. Very interesting to study the chart, thanks for sharing.

I think the middle class is struggling more than the lower class where I live. The lower class is getting more perks her like more food stamps

We have similar assistance programs in place in the USA. I have yet to see the supposed stimulus check that everyone here is talking about. I’ve been out of work over a month now and my husband owns his own business which is slowing down considerably. I am thankful for some help in the form of unemployment but it is less than half of what I was bringing home. We are at the point of picking and choosing what to pay.

This was an interesting read. I think the middle class is similar in most countries in terms of profession.

I didn’t know this. It seems like the middle class should be included and it’s a shame they are not.

It was very interesting to learn about how the Philippines are dealing with Covid19. I feel even the middle income families deserve help right now.

Very difficult times have come. It is good that the state supports at least some sections of the population and business. Some countries unfortunately do not have such an opportunity. Health to all!

Very interesting to read. It angers me to see how we’re all grouped together, as if we’re cattle with numbers.

This is totally discrimination, peoples who has control on resources who has divided us into economic classes , and then the same money of our hard working labour are offering to us……
