Known to be a multi-hyphenate person, Tessa Prieto-Valdes is the face of a modern woman who despite of the various commitments and activities still values her family above all else. In fact, she considers her family as her main source of inspiration.
Digital technology keeps Tessa’s modern family connected
With everyone in the family’s busy schedule—pursuing diverse interests, whether in the country of out of it (Bryan lives on his own now, while Tyron is currently studying abroad) – the rise of technology and the smartphone has proven to be a boon for the Valdes family.
“At times when the good old-fashioned way of spending time together gets difficult, we stay close to each other through technology,” says Globe Platinum new Brand Ambassador. “And because I consider this really important, aside from calls and SMS, we’ve also maximized the use of messaging apps like Viber or WhatsApp, and social media channels like Instagram and Snapchat. Passion for compassion
In the flurry of the very busy life she leads and glamorous gatherings she attends, Tessa finds that connections also allow her to indulge in her passion: charity. “I got that from my mom,” she shares. As someone who has never had any qualms about presenting herself exactly how she is, perhaps exuding a larger-than-life persona, but a naturally warm and caring individual, Tessa was hit hard by her brother’s death. “That pushed me to focus on something specific,” she reveals. “I felt the desire to make a difference and figured I could do so by giving back to those who need it.”
Her first charity function was a small-scale kids’ fashion show and mini auction where she raised P100,000. So happy and surprised with the result, Tessa realized that most people are willing to give to charity. Her idea was further fuelled when she was approached by Rajo Laurel to do a charity fashion show in 2002, the year after that, she officially launched the Red Charity Ball with Kaye Tinga. The annual event is one many people look forward to, not only for the world-class Filipino designs showcased, but also to contribute to a significant and trustworthy endeavor.
“With my work as a writer and interior designer, credibility is just as important for something like this,” Tessa points out. “That’s why I make sure to discuss where to direct the funds raised with the beneficiary organizations we work with. Whether it’s for disaster relief or community building, I check on the progress and results. We’ve been able to gain the trust and steady support of donors and sponsors because of this, and have made our efforts sustainable.”
